‘Othoi’ is a Bengali romantic thriller recently released on OTT.
It tells a story full of love and deep emotions, mixed with psychological tension. The film was released in theatres on June 14.
The main actors are Anirban Bhattacharya, Arna Mukhopadhyay, and Sahini Sarkar. ‘Othoi’ is a modern Bengali version of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy ‘Othello’. In this story, love and jealousy go hand in hand, leading to tragedy.
Story Summary:
The story takes place in Vinsura, a strange village with beautiful nature but cruel people. Othoi comes to live there with his widowed mother. His life is full of pain—his grandmother was burned alive, accused of being a witch. His mother died from poverty and lack of food.
Still, Othoi stays strong. The village landlord gives him shelter, but only out of pity, not kindness.
Othoi wears old clothes, eats leftover food, and sleeps on the floor—but he keeps going.
He does well in football, studies, career, and even in love. He becomes the pride of the village. Gogo, the landlord’s son, starts feeling jealous of him.
🩺 Both Othoi and Gogo become doctors. Gogo goes to America for cancer research. Othoi dreams of building a low-cost hospital for the people in his village—a dream that grows from his love for the land.
🌆 In Kolkata, a girl named Diya falls in love with Othoi. Their love faces problems because of social traditions and family background. Still, Diya chooses love. But her father warns her with a curse:
“A girl who can leave her father can also leave her husband.”
